The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the European Union's landmark data privacy legislation, enacted in May 2018. It harmonizes data protection law across EU member states and extends its reach globally — any organization that collects, processes, or stores the personal data of EU residents must comply, regardless of where that organization is headquartered.
GDPR gives individuals — called data subjects — extensive rights over their personal data: the right to access, correct, delete, and restrict processing of their information. It places corresponding obligations on organizations that collect or use that data, requiring transparency, accountability, and documented justification for every processing activity.
Enforcement has intensified significantly since 2023. Cumulative GDPR fines have exceeded €5.88 billion through 2026, with data protection authorities across Europe taking increasingly aggressive enforcement positions. Non-compliance is no longer a theoretical risk — it's a material business exposure.
